How to Keep your Spirits Up and Remain Productive during this Quarantine

This Quarantine has left many of us in a bad state. That bad state for you can be mentally, physically, or both. I know that having to stay inside most of the time has taken a toll on my well being but because this may be our reality for a while, we must find ways to work around the inconveniences. Here's a list of things that have helped me and perhaps will help you as well. The feelings of anxiousness and sadness is something I do experience from time to time, but I believe to change that you do need to build yourself through healthy habits.

1. Journal

I always say this because it works. You probably have a head full of thoughts and emotions, and the moment you write them all down is a step closer to understanding why you feel what you feel. Journaling is not only a good way to manage your emotions, but it helps you set and maintain goals. I feel more likely to achieve something when I write it down because it is almost as if I am holding myself accountable for the standards I have set for myself. It is a satisfying feeling to look back at your journal entry from months ago and see that you are closer to what you want to accomplish or even better... that you have actually accomplished it. The grind don't stop just because we are stuck inside.

2.  Maintain an Exercise Routine

Staying inside all day, everyday means we are getting even less of the exercise we would in our daily lives. Setting aside even 15 minutes to stretch in your daily routine will ensure that you’re getting active. Exercise not only is beneficial to keeping you fit, it improves your sleep and reduces stress. There are plenty of videos online that cater to different peoples needs when it comes to exercising so the most you have to do is find one that suits you and stick to your routine.

3. Set Time  Aside to Take Care of Yourself

Aside from exercising, because we are at home and no one will see us we often feel like we can just let ourselves go completely. Although that’s okay and we all need days to just be lazy and unproductive, we also need to not forget to take care of ourselves. Face masks, Hair masks, Nail care, etc. are all ways in which you can tend to yourself. When you take care of yourself and look better, oftentimes it will project on the outside and you will end up feeling better. I know when I put on makeup or do my skincare even if I have nowhere to go, I feel confident and pleased with myself.

4. Maintain a Routine in General

Don’t stay up until 2 am and then wake up at noon. Your basically setting yourself up for failure. I don’t care what anyone says, a routine like that is unhealthy and you should try to avoid it. Having a to do list and things you need to get done is a good thing. A disorderly life is only going to result in negative emotions. I personally feel better when I have stuff to get done, and I feel more accomplished when I get them done. A day of relaxing is cute, but constantly falling short with important duties will really have you feeling more down than you do usually. If you struggle with getting things done there is plenty of ways to manage your time and ensure you don’t procrastinate which I will discuss in a later blogpost.

5. Laugh Therapy

Entertainment is important. I know for me personally comedy shows and podcasts lift my spirits up. It’s good to have little pick me ups. Watch or listen to things that make you happy and add positive vibes to your life. There are some days when you need an extra something to keep you going that’s fine. We’re human and sometimes the only thing left to brighten up our day is a stupid tv show that could be considered a guilty pleasure.

6. Keep Yourself Connected With Loved Ones

Keeping in touch with family and friends is so important because spending time with loved ones make us feel good. So in a way this is a reminder to check up on them and keep in touch.  Staying at home alone all the time can make you feel disconnected and gloomy. I know even seeing my friends over a zoom call cheers me up because I know they’re doing well.

7. Get Closer to Your Spirituality

People underestimate the power of dua and learning more about your religion. Overtime it heals the heart and makes you become a better person. So setting aside 15 minutes to just read a verse from the Quran or watch a video to expand your knowledge will have you feeling good. When I feel anxious or depressed, I’m at a low point and I need to feel like that is going to be temporary and that better feelings will come. There is no better way to do that than try to improve yourself as a human being through the teachings of God.

P.S. These are things you can try, but sometimes no matter what you do you’ll feel gloomy during this quarantine. Some days will  be harder than other and I just want whoever feels that way to know that they are not alone. Gloomy days are a part life and there are bright sunny days ahead just wait patiently and you’ll see.
